Even with all the attention focused on TikTok’s planned closure in the USA, it’s still running unfazed in other parts of the world. Besides #BookTok and similar trends, #LearnOnTikTok gave rise to educational content. TikTok pushed it into the spotlight with the launch the STEM feed in 2024; this became a dedicated place for educational and inspiring STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) content in select markets across Europe, USA, Canada, UK and Ireland.
Now it’s the Middle East’s time, as the STEM feed debuts first in Saudi Arabia. While I don’t speak Arabic (can read it but not comprehend most of it), I caught the news of the launch from their newsroom release in Arabic.
#LearnOnTikTok in Dedicated Educational Hub
Content in the STEM feed is regionally optimized as TikTok works with local partners where it’s available. Majarra is the main point for the Arabic in the Middle East region, as they jointly vet content by many known creators on the platform itself. It’ll also be serving up content in other languages and from other regions.
Becoming a dedicated hub that delivers trusted high-quality educational content, it looks to blend education with entertainment. This will greatly help catalyze young minds looking to pursue their future in the STEM field, which will greatly be beneficial for Saudi Arabia on their grander vision.
To ensure the quality and integrity of STEM Feed content, all materials will be carefully reviewed by TikTok teams in collaboration with Common Sense Networks and Poynter Institute. Common Sense Networks will evaluate the educational value of the content, while Poynter will verify the credibility of the information provided. If either one doesn’t pass, then the content is not eligible for the STEM feed.
Backing this launch also comes with some interesting statistics
- More than 10M STEM-related videos published globally in the past three years
- 25% of teenagers globally visit the STEM feed on a weekly basis
- STEM content grew 35% globally since its launch with English-speaking content including auto-translated subtitles
Go STEM In
So if you’re ready to enable it, follow these steps on iOS/Android version of the app:
- In the TikTok app, tap Profile at the bottom.
- Tap the Menu ☰ button at the top, then select Settings and privacy.
- Tap Content preferences.
- Tap STEM feed, then turn the feed on or off.
However, I expected UAE and Qatar would have been included alongside Saudi Arabia, given TikTok’s plan to open a creative studio in Qatar. Bringing this first to Saudi Arabia looks to build on the momentum to support the country’s ambitious goals.
