Admit it that you use Google Maps for all your directions and locations. While Apple Maps has been mobile-only since launch (it’s been like 12+ years), that all changes with the beta launch of Apple Maps on the web. This is not only worldwide, but also includes the MENA region.
Besides macOS (excluding the native Apple Maps app), Windows users can also access it; this opens up a worthy challenge to Google Maps. As of today, it now supports the following web browsers on iPad, macOS, and Windows: Safari, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Microsoft Edge. Another added tip is it also adapts to dark mode just like on the iPhone/iPad.
| Platform | Browsers |
|---|---|
| macOS | Safari, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge |
| Windows | Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge |
| iPad | Safari, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox |
I’m actually keen to see just how well this competitive maps battle against Google pans out with this rollout.
Initial features
Just like the iOS version, you get all the standard features:
- users can get driving and walking directions; find great places and useful information including photos, hours, ratings, and reviews
- take actions like ordering food directly from the Maps place card
- browse curated Guides to discover places to eat, shop, and explore in cities around the world.
Devs who want to link out to Apple Maps on the web can do so using MapKit JS. This allows users to get driving directions, see detailed place information, and more.
Additional features including Look Around in 360 (which is available in select cities worldwide), will be available in the coming months on the web version. Currently available in English, more language support (hopefully Arabic) will be added in the future.
