Say what you want about WHOOP even as you compare it to fitbit (now owned by Google) and the Apple Watch. The brand has been nicely navigating the health fitness trend with its membership model as a “human performance company”. You pay an annual membership based on your preferred tier and wearable device associated with it, tying its wearable band to an SaaS-powered app that assess your health across multiple data points.
According to their official support page, the brand ships to the following countries in the Middle East (specifically in the GCC except for one country): Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, UAE, and Saudi Arabia.
WHOOP has been making major in-roads into the Middle East market. I thought it best to revisit their endeavours among the flurry of official announcements to understand the path they are charting.
WHOOP Performance labs in Qatar
Back in late October 2025, Invest Qatar (i.e. Investment Promotion Agency Qatar) announced a partnership with WHOOP that would see them opening the first international performance lab in Qatar. To give you some context to the significance of this announcement, it’ll be modeled after WHOOP Labs Boston which is their flagship performance science.
Located in Msheireb Downtown, the setup looks to open future partnerships opportunities with local institutions for sport performance research. This would enrich both the company’s endeavours and the local research landscape, especially with the growing talent pool stemming from the universities in the country especially under Qatar Foundation.
The milestone wasn’t just a typical press release sent to the media. Will Ahmed (CEO, WHOOP) was also present for the signing alongside CEO of Msheireb Properties and members of Invest Qatar. The biggest advantage of this facility will be the research opportunities on the Gulf region’s unique health, environmental, and cultural dynamics (climate stress to lifestyle patterns). Those learnings could be woven back into WHOOP’s wearable devices and product development roadmap.
Months later, WHOOP would appoint their first director overseeing the labs by poaching a QF branch campus alumnus who has worked at Aspetar (Disclosure: I know her from my college days. as she graduated at least a year early from her incoming cohort).
Weaving healthcare data and performance analytics in Saudi Arabia
In the weeks that followed, another new partnership was announced in Saudi Arabia. Lean Business Solutions, a PIF company focused on digital health solutions and operator of the country’s national health platform, announced a strategic partnership that aligns with the Saudi Vision 2030 as covered by the SPA.
It represents a major step toward integrating WHOOP’s advanced physiological analytics into Saudi Arabia’s national health platforms like Seha, Sehhaty, and Nphies. That means WHOOP members in the country will soon be able to choose to securely pair and view their performance data and medical data alongside each other. giving them a more complete picture of their health and recovery. with national health platforms such as
It represents a leap that morphs WHOOP into a health operating system. There is no certain timeline on the rollout, but we could expect to see it in the coming months as both parties work to enable secure data interoperability.
Advanced Labs with Unilabs in the UAE
Further solidifying their presence and expanding access to the detailed health data, WHOOP expanded their Advanced Labs offering to the UAE in partnership with Unilabs. The latter is an international provider of medical diagnostic services, and this would allow members to link clinically validated blood biomarkers from lab tests with their WHOOP data.
Unilabs is offering WHOOP’s signature 65-biomarker panel at its centres throughout the UAE, and you have an option for home collection. It’s priced at AED 733 (in line with pricing in the US) and members can upload results to the WHOOP app after completing the tests.
This links clinically validated blood biomarkers with round-the-clock data collected from WHOOP wearables. Wearers will have a consolidated view of health indicators in one platform. By uploading the data, users willl receive personalised guidance from WHOOP Coach to contextualise results alongside recovery, sleep and daily behaviour data.
Going off into a small tangent: if you’ve seen the news of the Google Fitbit Air band, it’s been labeled as a ‘WHOOP’ killer due to its pricing. What also caught my eye is the CEO’s response from his X account on the very same day.
There’s a lot to digest when it comes to the strategic goals of WHOOP doubling down on the Middle East. For years, many tech companies just looked at the region as a secondary/tertiary market. Now, they see the whole region being very progressive and forward-thinking as mature markets are held up in other issues.
This is what I can crunch for Part 1, so come back soon for the next part.
