If you’ve been a heavy Snapchat user, you’ve seen the app have a Memories feature since its launch in 2016. It has served as a selective timeline backup for Snapchatters to save their special snaps. Adding additional perspective, Snap has officially shared that users have saved more than 1 trillion Memories.
Now the page is turning, as they have announced the introduction of new Memories Storage Plans. That means they’re putting the brakes on backing up Memories, offering up to 5GB for free.
Storage tiers for Snapchat Memories
There will be an introductory storage plan of offering up to 100GB of storage for $1.99 per month. Snapchat+ subscribers will have 250GB of storage, which adds more value for the subscription product. Snapchat Platinum users will get 5TB as part of their $15.99 monthly subscription.
All is not lost as they want to ease the transition and avoid users making it a sudden impulse decision. Snapchat will provide 12 months of temporary storage for any Memories that exceed the 5GB storage limit. Cloud-based backup storage isn’t going to be cheap, so it looks like this is one way to ease their backend infrastructure.
If you’re over the limit but don’t sign up for a plan, your oldest Snaps will be saved. Only the most recent ones that are over the storage limit will be deleted. This shouldn’t impact most users, since Snapchat claims that the vast majority of users are within the current limit. The company notes that users can still download Memories directly to their devices.
